The Journey: From Small-Town Texas to North Coast Nor'easters

My story started in Stephenville, Texas, a small country town about two hours south of Dallas. After coming home from my Army deployment in 2006, I wanted to dive straight into work. I took a job selling cell phones inside Costco, hit the ground running, and within eight months was promoted to manage nine stores across Long Island, New York.

Moving from rural Texas to Long Island was total culture shock. I rented a tiny 400-sq-ft basement apartment for $1,500/month, and seeing tear-down houses listed for $400,000 made my jaw drop. Add in freezing Nor'easters where my neighbors literally had to dig me out of my basement door, and I quickly realized the Northeast wasn’t my forever home.

Chasing Opportunities: Louisiana, Chicago, and Pittsburgh

I grabbed an opportunity with a pharmaceutical company that relocated me back to Texas to work with doctors in the Dallas area. Another promotion soon took me to their corporate office in Covington, Louisiana, on the Northshore, just across Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans. I loved the deep history, culture, and music of New Orleans—especially exploring hidden local neighborhoods like the Bywater, where I later bought and restored a 150-year-old historic home.

Subsequent promotions and career shifts took me through several major U.S. hubs:

• Chicago, Illinois: A world-class city, but the brutal winter climate and severe health challenges made it a tough season. Recovering 100% through natural health care inspired me to take control of my career and become an entrepreneur.
• Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: I lived in the vibrant Lawrenceville neighborhood along Butler Street. I loved Pittsburgh's rich history and architecture, but eventually decided to transition into financial consulting for teachers back in New Orleans.
